Trash Service

The provision of residential trash service is outlined inCity Ordinance(Section 245.030, Collection of Solid Waste). Sanitation services are provided throughGFL (Green for Life) Environmental(previously WCA). The cost of monthly trash service is outlined in the Schedule of Fees Listing. Trash cans are normally delivered on Fridays.

Trash pick up during a holiday week will be delayed one day (beginning with the date of the holiday). GFL recognizes 4 holidays annually:

  • New Years Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day
  • Independence Day

Recycling Service & Dropoff

Curbside recycling is included in the solid waste contract. Residents can "opt-out" of curbside recycling by calling GFL Environmentalat 816-380-5595. Curbside recycling is picked up on your regular trash day.

    Glass can be recycled in the Ripple Glass container at Price Chopper (15700 N169 Highway, Smithville, MO 64089) at the Smithville Marketplace.

    Yard Waste Service & Drop Off

    Yard waste is included in the solid waste contract with WCA/GFL. Residents MUST "opt-in" to the curbside yard waste collection by contactingGFL Environmentalat 816-380-5595. Yard waste is collected weekly from mid-Marchthru mid-December (10 paper/compostable bags per week or10 18" x 36" bundles per week) with limited collection from mid-December thru mid-March. Please see details in the guidelines below.

      Smithville residents are also able to utilize theMissouri Organic yard waste drop off site located at 11660 North Main Street, Kansas City, MO 64155. This site opens in mid-March for theseason. For more information call 816-513-1313. There may be a fee charged for non-Kansas City residents.

      How Do I Apply for the Senior Discount?

      You can email a copy of proof of age and agreement formto Utility Billingor present itat City Hall, 107 West Main Street Smithville, MO 64089during our normalbusiness hours of 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.

      How Do I Get Rid of Yard Waste?

      The City of Smithville offers options when it comes to disposing of yard waste. Yard waste consists of the following:

      • Leaves
      • Grass clippings
      • Small Sticks and Tree Branches.

      These items cannot be included with household trash. Placing or blowing yard waste into the street storm drains or waterways is strictly prohibited.Curbside pickup of yard waste is offered by the City of Smithville. Curbside pick-up is included in the contract with WCA. The cost isincluded in the monthly charge for residential solid waste pick-up.Yard waste must be put in compostable bags or bundled (small branches).

      Residents must opt-in for curbside yard waste pick-up by contacting GFL at 816-380-5595. Yard waste is collected weekly on the same day as trash and recycling(calendar and additional yard waste information). Smithville residents can utilize the Missouri Organic Yard Waste Drop-Off Sitelocated at 11660 North Main, Kansas City MO, 64155(Just Off NE Cookingham Drive and I-435).For more information, please call 816-483-0908.


      How Do I Receive the Senior Discount if I am Eligible?

      You will need to provide proof of your age, and turn in a completed agreement form to the Finance Department.

      The utility bill must be in your name to receive the discount.

      I'm a Senior, So Why Didn't I Receive the Discount?

      • You must fill out the agreement formand provide proof of age to receive the discount.
      • You must be the account holder to receive the discount.
      • The City will not apply the discount to previously issued utility bills.
      • The discount will not be applied to late fees.
      • You must be in good standing with Utility Billing to activate the account.

      What Do I Do if I Have Additional Trash Bags?

      Residents can purchase extra bagtags at City Hall for $1.50 per bag tag or $6.50 per sheet for 5 bag tags. Ifresidents would like to order the extra bag tags directly from WCA/GFL, they willbe charged $7.50 per sheet.

      The bag tags are for trash only, recyclables are notincluded in this program. One tag is good for 1 (one), 33 (thirty-three) gallonbag. Each bag is not to exceed 40 lbs. If you have multiple extra bags, eachbag will need it’s own tag.

      The tag should be placed around the neck of the bag and placedat the curbside with the tag visible to the driver. The bags will be picked upwith your scheduled collection day.

      Bag Tags are for bags only, tags may not be put on pieces of furniture or otherover-sized objects.

      When Will My Senior Discount Be Applied?

      If you sign up by, or before, the 24th day of the month, thediscount will be applied to your next bill. If you sign up after the 24th,the discount will be applied to the following billing cycle. For example, ifyou sign up by November 24th you will receive the discount on yourDecember bill. If you sign up on November 25th, you will receive thediscount on your January bill.
