Why you are going to love our Slow Cooker Split Pea Soup Recipe

Even down here in balmy Miami...I enjoy a good soup or stew when the temperatures drop!

Sometimes I enjoy a bowl of soup JUST BECAUSE, but especially when I am feeling under the weather.

There's just something about a warm bowl of hearty goodness that relaxes me and makes me all cozy in my bed while I binge watch Netflix or Hulu!

Soups, stews and chilis are the BEST comfort foods when you're feeling sick and sluggish.

I recently had a bad cold, which resulted in a sore throat, and ALL I ate was soft pastas and soups!

This Slow Cooker Split Pea Soup Recipe is perfect for all of the above!

Slow Cooker Soup Recipes are the Best!

Bonus...it's cooked in a slow cooker, so all you have to do is dump the ingredients and forget it! This is especially helpful when you are not feeling your best, as you can throw all of the ingredients in the slow cooker in the morning.

Then when you get up to shower and take your meds, then it is all ready for you when you get hungry later!

I absolutely love slow cookers and use mine for a TON of different recipes. I began using one back when I was married and working full time, as it was such a struggle to have a homemade meal on the table every day after working all day.

I started out with a small, regular sized one, and then eventually, I upgraded to a large one that I still use to this day!

Mine worked great - doesn’t make sense that yours didn’t. Maybe your slow cooker isn’t working properly.

  10. Emma

    Me too!

  11. Dominique

The same happened to me unfortunately... not mushy 🙁 just like chicken soup with peas!

  12. Kara

Was so excited to try , but my split peas did not get mushy... Been cooking in my ninja foodi slow cooker for 8 hours on low & the peas are still crunchy 🙁

We made this in the Quick Cooker (slow cooker option, four hours) and it came out perfect. Everything cooked as it should, we were not disappointed. Split pea has been my favorite since I was a kid and your recipe was spot on! This is a definitely a keeper. Thank you for sharing it.

This sounds wonderful, I was wondering if anyone has put potatoes in this recipe…did they cook to mush father 8 hours?

  16. Jenn

If you are going to add potatoes, make sure they are a russet, those tend to hold up the best in slow cooker recipes!

This turned out great! I read others that said theirs were crunchy… after you put it all in pot you have to stir before starting to cook. The peas were all stuck together and that would cause them not to cook well.
Thank you for this recipe! We love it!

I read somewhere that the peas have to be fresh, and maybe if the reader had them for a long time, that would cause that. The other thought was that the peas might not have been immersed in the broth. Just suggestions. Mine was perfect at four hours on high.

  19. Lauren

There seems to be mixed reviews on this. I found it needs to be cooked much longer than the 8 hours on low. I’m not sure if you were supposed to soak the peas prior but mine aren’t getting mushy either and I’ve done 4 hrs on low(wasn’t getting soft) and 4 hours on high (soft but not mushy) not sure where the issue lies.

  20. Jenn

I have had a few people say the same thing - did you stir them up so that they were not all stuck together? I am trying to figure out how people are getting different results.

I read that if the split peas are old (even when you buy them) they don't soften, irrespective of the duration of time they are cooked.

  22. Lynne

I always soak the peas over night. Soup turns out great

  24. Jenn

    Thank you for that tip!

Made this today for the first time. I'm glad I read thru the comments the day before. I soaked my peas for 3 hrs before putting them in the crock. After 4 hrs on low it wasn't looking like the peas were cooking at all (yes I stirred them well) so I turned it up to high for almost 5 hrs. They did cook and there was a lot of liquid. I used my immersion blender and it thickened up nicely. It's good soup and was super easy to make!

  26. Karleigh

    Any leftovers,can be frozen?

  27. Jennifer

They can definitely be frozen, but I think the soup would be a lot mushier once it's reheated.
