Biography

Lubbert Lubbertse was born about 1620 in Meppel, Drenthe, Netherlands. Various secondary sources list various parents for him. [1] [2] [3]

He married Geesie Roelofse (van Houten) in Meppel about 1643 [3] [4] or 1645.[1]

Along with his brother Willem, and their wives and children, Lubbert migrated with his wife and four children ages 9, 13, 17 and an infant to New Amsterdam on the ship Hoop ("Hope"), leaving Amsterdam on 8 April 1662 [1] and arriving on 24 May. [5] [3]:

Later in the same year, 15 December 1662, Lubbert applied for the grant of a building plot in Flatbush. [6] Apparently, he built a home there because he resided in Flatbush thereafter. [3]

Lubbert lived circa 1663 at Flatbush, Long Island, NY and in 1676 at Hackensack valley. [7] Children: Lubbert, Gerretien / Grietien (Margretie), and Marien /Mariken (Mary) Roelef/ Roelof, Jan, Juriaen[8]

On 20 August 1670, Lubbert purchased from Jan Miserol, a house in Rustenburch (the south side of Flatbush). In Oct 1673, he sold his farmland in Flatbush to Cornelis Janse de Seen. [6]

In 1676, Lubbert and his family removed to Hackensack, Province of New Jersey (Bergen County was not created until 1683.) His church membership was recorded as transferred on 2 October. [6]

A tree posted in the GSBC (Genealogical Society of Bergen County) lists daughter Gerretien Lubberts b. 24 Jan 1647, d. b 1662, and then a second daughter Margrietje Westervelt b. c 1665. It is the second Margrietje who then marries Martin Paulussen b. 15 Apr 1663, a "y.d." in 1694 when they married. The source given is the Westervelt File of Patricia Wardell, not currently available online.[9]

On 28 Mar 1681, he witnessed a baptism at the Reformed Dutch Church in New York. [10]

In 1686, a Reformed Dutch Church was organized in Hackensack, and Lubbert Lubbertse, the elder [and] his wife Geesie Roelofse were listed among the original members.[11]

Family

"Geessie Roelofs married Lubbert the brother of Willem, she was the sister of Dirkje Roelofse (Van Houten), who married Willem. Geesie had six children: four born in Holland, two in America. This family arrived in America with Willem and family on May 24, 1662. Lubbert bought a lot of land on Long Island and he owned many slaves. About 1675 he sold his land for $1,600.00 and moved to New Jersey."[12]

Death

02 Oct 1676. Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey, [22]Note that although the record has the word "deceased" after his name, it may have been an error, as he is listed with other new members of the church, and other sources have shown him to be a witness to several baptisms in 1681 and 1685. His death is more likely after 1686.

Last Name

Some comments regarding last name:

  • Although the Westervelt Genealogy suggests (without a direct claim) that the van Westervelt surname was adopted by the family prior to emigration from the Netherlands, the passenger list (uncited) on page 1 renders his name as "Lubbert Lubbertsen".
  • Bergen [5] transcribed the passenger list using the same spelling.
  • Willem and his brother Lubbert Lubbertsz both probably were from Westerveld, a town near Meppel in Drenthe, Netherlands.[23] That's where the last name, later used by descendants, 'Van Westervelt', came from (so it probably had nothing to do with the 'famous' Van Westervelts from Harderwijk) and it looks like it was not used by them as last name. It's probably the same for the wifes who also did not use van Houten for last name and just their patronymics..
