Obituary Preview: Oletha Spitzer Lotts, 100, of Harrisonburg, passed away on Saturday May 4, 2024, at Sunnyside Presbyterian Home, after a brief stay. She was born September 16, 1923, in Rockingham County and was the daughter of the late Ernest M. and Palma I. Spitzer. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and Howard Spitzer, first husband and father of her three children, Robert H. Perry, II, second husband, Charles Ralph Lotts, and her beloved son, Robert H. Perry, III.Oletha graduated from Keezletown High School and attended Elon College, NC. She loved basketball and played on the Keezletown High School 1941 Rockingham County Basketball Championship team. She was employed for 40 plus years at F.W. Woolworths as a Department Manager and as Manager of their lunch counter and soda fountain.She loved to travel. Israel was her favorite trip because she was baptized in the Jordan River. She grew up in New Hope Christian Church and in 1999 became a member of Harrisonburg Nazarene Church where she served as greeter, money counter, visitation team and member of The Joy Group. She attended Women’s Bible Fellowship for many years and loved studying the Bible with friends. She reflected her love for the Lord by loving people and was a beloved friend by many.She is survived by two daughters, Carolyn A. Dean (Wayne) and Sandra L. Perry, who served as her dedicated and loving caretaker the last eight years of her life. Survived also by daughter-in-law, Maggi Perry; grandchildren, Kirby Dean (Regina), Scott, Robert IV, and Christopher Perry and Shana Beime; great-grandchildren; Maycee Dean, Stella and Madison Perry plus nieces and nephews.A memorial service will be held at Harrisonburg First Church of the Nazarene on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at 1 p.m., with Pastors Jim Harrison and Joe Stoner officiating. The family will receive friends following the service. Burial will be private.

Curtis Worfield Breeden, 92, of McGaheysville, passed away, Friday, May 3, 2024, at Sentara RMH Medical Center in Harrisonburg.

Mr. Breeden was born March 23, 1932, in Rockingham County, and was the son of the late, Raymond and Frances Hensley Breeden. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Viands Breeden; a daughter, Enola Marshall, as well as three brothers, William “Billy”, Rudolph and Eugene Breeden.

Diana was well appreciated in her community in Virginia as a yoga teacher and shiatsu therapist. “Yoga is medicine for me, and hopefully for my students as well, more than it is a system of exercise or anything else”. He was born December 10, 1958, in Page County, Virginia and was the son of the late Harold Franklin Sampson, Sr. and Gail Brown Sampson.Frankie loved to spend his time with family and friends playing games, listening to music, telling stories and entertaining. He loved the outdoors and spent much of his time being outside by the river or working around the house. He was a skilled carpenter working construction for most of his life. Frankie knew no stranger. He attended the Church of Faith for many years. Harold Franklin “Frankie” Sampson II, 65, of Shenandoah, passed away Sunday, April 28, 2024, at his home. He was born December 10, 1958, in Page County, Virginia and was the son of the late Harold Franklin Sampson, Sr. and Gail Brown Sampson.

Frankie loved to spend his time with family and friends playing games, listening to music, telling stories and entertaining. He loved the outdoors and spent much of his time being outside by the river or working around the house. He was a skilled carpenter working construction for most of his life. He will be missed by all those who knew, loved and shared time with him.

Margaret worked as a caregiver for her entire career. She greatly enjoyed baking and gardening. Her greatest enjoyment came from taking care of her family and others. She was a member of the Harrisonburg Freewill Baptist Church. On August 20, 1961, she married John Monroe Good, who survives. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Good is survived by her children, Larry M. Good and wife, Cindy of Timberville, Teresa D. Ritchie and husband, Ralph of Timberville, and Ann M. Smith of Timberville; siblings, Allan Yarber, David Yarber, and Debbie Testerman; twelve grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews, and her beloved dogs, Yappy and Bruster.Mrs. Good was also preceded in death by a son, Danny Watkins; eight brothers and two sisters.A celebration of Mrs. Good’s life will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024, at 11 a.m., at Harrisonburg Free Will Baptist Church with Pastors Paul Collins and Donnie Sherfey officiating. He graduated from St. Ann's Academy in New York City (now Archbishop Molloy High School).Al entered Monmouth College and graduated with a BS in business administration majoring in economics. He was granted a Fellowship to attend the University of Pittsburgh where he received a MA degree and PhD in economics. He began his career teaching as Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor of Economics with tenure at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown from 1972-1983. Taking a leave of absence from 1979 to 1980 he served as Faculty Fellow in Energy and Minerals Economics at the US General Accountability Office (GAO).Al served on the faculty of James Madison University as Professor of Finance in the College of Business from 1983 until his retirement in 2009. During the 26 years at JMU he was a Fulbright Scholar in Poland in 1987; he did research at the Commerzbank in Frankfurt am Main, Germany on a sabbatical leave where he developed contacts that led to the establishment of the International Exchange Program at the JMU College of Business; he was the Director of the International Business Exchange Programs from 1990 until 1997 initiating exchange programs with universities in Argentina, France, Germany and Hong-Kong; and he was Director of the Department of Finance and Business Law for nine years.A devoted husband to his wife Elisabeth (Lisel) since August 1968, he shared her love for travel and exploring the beauties and cultures of other countries. She was preceded in death by her parents and older brothers Joseph Andrew Polka and Andrew Joseph Polka, Jr., and her son Marshall L. Wise, III. Surviving are her daughters Kimberley W. Atkins and husband Eric of Broadway and Pamela M. Mize and husband Kenneth of Dayton. Evelyn was affectionately called Mütti by her children. Her favorite past times were reading, cooking, and playing a competitive game of Scrabble. She will be remembered for her strong faith and compassion for others. Louise Belle Butler, 75, of McGaheysville, Virginia, passed away on Monday, April 15, 2024.

Obituary Preview: Roger W. Rae, U.S. Navy retired, passed away at age 92 on Thursday, April 11, 2024, at Nairobi West Hospital in Kenya, Africa. He caught a very aggressive sepsis infection which rapidly shut down most of his major organs. Roger spent the last two years of his life in Kenya under the care of his oldest daughter and her husband. Although this move was motivated by his dementia diagnosis, Roger took every opportunity to make new friends, enjoy life to its fullest and get better acquainted with great-grandchildren living in Nairobi.

Roger was born February of 1932 in Massachusetts. He was raised in Marblehead, MA and Laconia, NH, graduating from High School in 1950 just before the Korean War. In 1951, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and retired in 1972 after serving 21 years. He served in both the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Roger’s rank was Yeoman Petty Officer 1st Class. Roger’s hearing became severely impaired during his service. Since retiring from the U.S. Navy, Roger took on various administrative employment positions in Maryland, and later in Virginia. Off and on for many decades, Roger taught sign language classes in both States different times of his life...the latest at the Harrisonburg Community Activities Center. For a short time, he was chaplain for a local chapter of the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), a two-year member of the Weyers Cave, VA Lions Club and member of several U.S. Navy organizations.

In 1953, Roger married Jeanne Burleigh of Tilton, NH who remained by his side for 67 years before passing away January of 2020. This beautiful union produced four children. Surviving Roger are two daughters, Charlene Kingsbury (married to Charles) of Athi River Kenya, Luanne Rae-Hurd (married to Jeff) of Williamsport, MD, and the youngest son, Eric Rae of Harrisonburg, VA. Other survivors are one sister, Barbara Lessard of Clearwater, FL, six living grandchildren: Sarah, Joshua, Sam, Amanda, Melissa and Lindsey, and many great-grandchildren with his first great-great-granddaughter on the way.

In addition to his wife, Jeanne Rae, Roger was preceded in death by; his oldest son, Roger Rae, Jr. (known as Skip), Skip’s stillborn son and recently Skip’s wife, Susan Rae. Also preceding in death were one great-granddaughter, two other stillborn great-grandchildren, two sisters and both parents. He was loved by many and will be missed.

Roger will be cremated as per his request, and will be buried beside his wife at Culpeper National Cemetery. A service will be conducted there with full military honors.

Prior to burial, a memorial service will be conducted at People’s Baptist Church at 3523 Spotswood Trail (locally known as Route 33E), Penn Laird, VA. This is located just outside of Harrisonburg, Virginia. The date and time are yet to be announced.
