I'm a firm believer that autumn is the most romantic season. It's my favorite season in general, so I might be a little biased, but surely you agree that browning leaves and crisp, cosy evenings form a fairytale backdrop for blossoming love. Yes, this theory is inspired by Nora Ephron, and I'm all for it.
So it makes sense that many couples would schedule their nuptials during this special time of year. May to August might be peak wedding season, but September and October are also popular months to tie the knot. We often spend this season adjusting to colder weather and stocking up on the layers it necessitates, so the question of what to wear to an autumn wedding can often be difficult to answer.
Certain fabrics, silhouettes and colourways are far better suited to an autumn ceremony than a summer one—and with the help of some of my favourite influencers, I've deciphered exactly which variations are safe bets. So before you panic about the possibility of a chilly church and reach for the nearest faux-fur coat, scroll down to see six easy and stylish October-friendly wedding looks.

October is peak fall, so go ahead and embrace a seasonal look (you know, if that's your vibe). Warm Earth tones are the perfect choice for dresses, suits and separates alike. No matter the weather, you can always lean into the spooky season vibes by opting for classic October hues like burnt orange, plum and black.
We would recommend opting for a closed toe shoe or a classic court shoe. Fall weddings can be either outdoors or indoors. During the colder fall months, opt for a pair of closed toe shoes. While open or open toe shoes can be cute and classy, they tend to work better in warm-season weddings than fall weddings.
For a fun jacket to throw over your dress for fall or winter, try a faux fur jacket. There are so many options to choose from. You can go cropped, or long, or anything in-between. Faux fur feels a little nicer to wear to a wedding than just your everyday coat.
For your wedding guest dress, think of earth tones or warm hues, especially for Fall and Winter rustic weddings. Men can opt for dark brown or dark green suits or ties to be on theme. Women can focus on a natural mix of earth tones across tights, cardigans, dresses, skirts, and pants.
Rich, darker colors like deep emerald green, black, navy, and burgundy are all appropriate options, but hues like rose, blush, and lavender can make for stunning fall wedding guest options, too–as long as your dress feels, well, dressy.
The brilliant hues seen outdoors during October often inform couples' color palettes. Bright orange, deep red, and golden yellow hues match the seasonal foliage and look striking when painted across a wedding venue, while dark green mirrors the rolling hills of a vineyard.
You can also wear boots or open-toe heeled shoes to a fall wedding if that's more your style. But again, Lee urges to "think about where you'll be walking." "Open versus closed-toe heels are simply a style choice and matter of personal preference," says Walsh, but they're generally better suited to indoor events.
I actually just invested in a classic black suiting option that will be my go-to for fall weddings.” Alexandra Macon, Vogue contributor and co-founder of Over-The-Moon, agrees: "It is perfectly acceptable, and chic, to wear black to a wedding—as long as it's festive and not funereal," she says.
In this case I'd recommend a 5:00 ceremony if you're having a ceremony no longer than 30 minutes. This means for the post-ceremony time, you'll have the remaining sunset light for gorgeous bride and groom portraits. Without a first look, you should consider a ceremony start time no later than 4:00.
Pastel colors, floral prints, and weather-ready styles should be taken into consideration when choosing your look. Colors such as pale blue, mauve, gray, lavender, and pink are ideal for the spring wedding season.
"The general rule of thumb for seasonal attire is to wear lighter colors for a spring or summer wedding and darker colors for winter and fall weddings," Singla advised. As for wearing black to a daytime wedding, Singla said stark black wouldn't be her first choice.
Jumpsuits are some of my favorite wedding attire. They are great for an outdoor fall wedding because they can cover and keep your legs warm which is more than most dresses can do. You can cover your arms with a blazer or longer jacket. I love a velvet jumpsuit but you can add a touch of sparkle for a great option too!
As a general rule, "wearing black is totally acceptable, as the hue is very versatile," says bridal stylist Julie Sabatino of The Stylish Bride. Make the shade work for you—at any type of wedding—with these ideas for choosing the right fabrice, length, and accessories.
October is the most popular month to get married for a reason—it features mild weather, beautiful scenery, and a host of theme ideas. This month provides plenty of hearty in-season foods, beautiful blooms, and a moodier color palette. Book early and budget wisely.
